WITHOUT GOD'S GRACE The painting is a sequel to Point of Decision had I continued to reject God's salvation. The drawing is a self-portrait. The window that I helplessly stare through represents my captivity to sin. The Scriptures inform us that all mankind begins on a course toward fiery judgment, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Ro 3:23). That course is changed only by God's grace when we acknowledge our sin (confession), change our ways (repentance) and embrace God (in spirit and truth). The menacing spikes represent my sins. Every one, whether in action or in thought, is in full view of God. They point at me, from whom they originated, out of the dark debris of sin. The verdict is clear and immediate: GUILTY. Even my own conscience breaks out from deep within and testifies against me. To my horror, the opportunity for salvation has passed. The Day of Judgment is upon me. God has drawn up the rope of deliverance I had mocked and ignored. There is no forgiveness, no restoration, no substitution, no escape available to me now. I, alone, am accountable for my sins and must pay the price. My sins have become my doom, and transform into the objects of my eternal torment. I am hurled helplessly into them, "where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth" (Mt 13:42). "Ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, 'We will not walk in it'" (Je 6:16). "You say, 'I am innocent; he is not angry with me.' But I will pass judgment on you because you say, 'I have not sinned'" (Je 2:35). "Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold" (Ps 52:7). |
